Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services

Company Overview

The Arkansas Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) is the largest state agency with more than 10,000 employees working in all 75 counties. Every county has at least one local office where citizens can apply for any of the services the department offers. Some counties, depending on their size, have more than one office. DHHS employees work in 12 major divisions and five support offices to provide services to citizens of the state. DHHS provides services to more than 700,000 Arkansans each year.

DHHS employees come into direct contact with thousands of people daily and offer the “safety net” Arkansas families turn to when they are facing difficult times. DHHS takes care of Arkansans of all ages ranging from infants to senior citizens. Using a blend of federal and state Medicaid dollars, DHHS is currently paying for 45 percent of the babies born in Arkansas and for the cost of care for 75 percent of state’s nursing home patients.

DHHS is involved in virtually every facet of life in the state. DHHS staff oversees the regulation of nursing home and childcare facilities. DHHS is also responsible for finding adoptive families for foster children, protecting abused and neglected children, funding the home-delivery of meals for the elderly and operating the juvenile justice system. DHHS oversees services to blind Arkansans and helps develop volunteer programs, which have a profound impact at the community level. The department also protects elderly Arkansans from abuse and neglect and operates human development centers across the state, which serve the developmentally disabled. DHHS also provides mental health services to nearly 60,000 people each year through its system of community mental health care centers.
