Founded in 1948, University of Maryland's Institute for Governmental Service and Research (IGSR) is dedicated to improving the well-being of individuals and communities through applied research, education, training, and technology innovations. With a long-standing record of public service, the Institute has successfully guided policy, improved operations and outcomes, and contributed to knowledge along with the adoption of evidence-based practices in partnership with public and private agencies. Areas of interest include public safety, public health, justice administration, organizational effectiveness, leadership and governance, fiscal management, and land use and growth management. IGSR has undertaken national research and technology initiatives to enhance government effectiveness and efficiency and to promote best practices. As part of its service portfolio, the Institute also provides strategic planning consultation and facilitation.
