The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a racially diverse and culturally dynamic college town and a UNESCO City of Literature, alongside the picturesque Iowa River. Iowa City is frequently cited for its quality of life in national rankings. Founded in 1847, UI is the state's oldest public institution of higher education. UI enrolls 33,000 students, including 9,000 graduate, professional, and post-graduate students. A member of the Association of American Universities since 1909 and the Big Ten Conference since 1899, the University of Iowa is home to a nationally recognized hospital and an internationally renowned writing program. Iowa was the first public school to admit men and women on an equal basis and to officially endorse an LGBT student group (in 1970).
